Create a profile in the Registration & Licensing Portal using a passport-quality photo. Complete the Initial Security Officer Application and request affiliation with a licensed security company. The hiring company must accept the affiliation request and upload the required identification and Form I-9. You must also complete payment, the required background check, and applicable training before LSBPSE can approve your registration. 

No. Once the company accepts affiliation, you may appear on their company roster, but you cannot begin working until you receive a valid registration card displaying the company name and your registration issue and expiration dates. You must also complete your training before the first work assignment.

The registration fee may be submitted by either the applicant or the security company. 

Security officer registrations are valid for two years. Your registration card will display your issue and expiration dates.

A standard first-time security officer applicant must complete S.O.S.T. 1101 and S.O.S.T. 1102 and pass the required examinations before the first work assignment.

Sign in to the  Licensing & Registration Portal, review your registration and expiration information, complete the required renewal information, submit any requested documentation, pay the applicable renewal fee, and monitor your account for status updates.

If you are already registered and move to another licensed security company, your registration information and company affiliation must be updated through the  Licensing & Registration Portal. Follow the applicable transfer or change-of-employment requirements before beginning work under the new company.

Before performing armed security duties, complete the applicable firearms training and qualification requirements, then submit the required registration status change through the Licensing & Registration Portal.

Active and Retired LEO Registration Information 

Active LEO

Does need to be registered:

• When the guard is operating within their jurisdiction as an employee of the security company (Background check and S.O.S.T 1101 and 1102 are not required. However, all relevant training including current POST certificates, POST firearms cards, and commission cards must be uploaded to their profile to exempt them from these requirements.)

• When the guard is operating outside their jurisdiction as an employee of the security company (Background check and S.O.S.T 1101 and 1102 are not required. However, all relevant training including current POST certificates, POST firearms cards, and commission cards must be uploaded to their profile to exempt them from these requirements.)

Does NOT need to be registered with the state board: 

• Active law enforcement officers do not need to be registered when the officer is operating within their jurisdiction as an independent contractor.

Retired LEO

ALL MUST be registered: 

• Retired within the last 5 years- Must complete a background check. S.O.S.T. 1101 and 1102 are not required. However, all relevant training including current POST certificates, POST firearms cards, and commission cards must be uploaded to their profile to exempt them from this requirement. The four-hour LSBPSE S.O.S.T. 1401 training course is highly recommended.

• Retired 5 years ago or longer- Must complete a background check. Additionally, they must take the four-hour LSBPSE S.O.S.T. 1401 training course and pass the exam.  All relevant training including current POST certificates, POST firearms cards, and retired commission cards must be uploaded to their profile to exempt them from S.O.S.T 1101 and 1102.
