SECURITY CANINE
Specifically trained and certified for private-security patrol operations including deterrence, handler protection, and property protection.
DETECTOR CANINE
Specifically trained and certified to detect explosives or controlled dangerous substances by olfactory means (sense of smell), and operate solely for detection & notification.

WHAT IS A K9 TEAM?
A canine team consists of a security canine or detector canine and its assigned handler who function as a unit.
KEY CANINE DEFINITIONS
CANINE HANDLERS
A security officer registered with the Board who has completed a nationally accredited and Board-approved training program* and is certified to deploy with a security canine or detector canine.
CANINE TEAMS
A canine team consists of a security canine or detector canine and its assigned handler who function as a unit. A canine may not be deployed unless both the canine and its handler are certified in accordance with Louisiana laws and Board rules.
DIGITAL CREDENTIAL
An electronic registration card issued by the Board that verifies the security officer's qualifications and status.
REQUIREMENTS FOR K9 HANDLERS
- Must be a registered security officer affiliated with a Board licensed company.
- Must complete Board-approved training requirements.
- Must meet applicable certification requirements.
- Must comply with all Board laws, rules, and standards governing canine operations.
- Canine handlers and canine teams are registered and regulated by LSBPSE in accordance with R.S. 37:3284.1 and applicable Board rules

Canine training, certification, recertification, credentialing, and deployment requirements are subject to rules and standards adopted by LSBPSE. Additional program information and approved training requirements may be published as implementation is completed.
*Nationally Accredited and Board-Approved Training Programs
Including but not limited to those established by the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA), the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association (NNDDA), or the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA).
