Instructor Requirements (Outside)

An Outside Instructor is licensed to provide security officer training throughout Louisiana.


Applicants must:

  • Be approved by LSBPSE and meet the general qualifications for licensure under Louisiana law.
  • Meet at least one of the following qualification pathways:
  • 3 years of qualifying supervisory experience with a contract security company, proprietary security organization, or a federal, state, local, parochial, municipal, or United States military law-enforcement agency;
  • Degree in administration of justice or equivalent from an accredited college or university;
  • P.O.S.T.-certified instructor; or
  • Louisiana teaching certificate or equivalent plus 1 year of supervisory experience in the security field.
  • Submit the required instructor application and supporting documentation.
  • Provide a résumé with verifiable employment dates and all identification, photograph, fingerprint/background-check information, and qualifying certifications or credentials required by LSBPSE.
  • Submit any training program, course curriculum, or other training documentation required by LSBPSE for the applicable training category.
  • Maintain at least $100,000 in general liability insurance with the State of Louisiana named as additional insured.
  • Pass the LSBPSE Instructor Examination with a minimum score of 70%.
  • Pay the applicable instructor license fee and Instructor Examination fee.


Teaching authority: May provide approved training statewide rather than being restricted to employees of one company.



Important: An existing In-House Instructor who wants to become an Outside Instructor must submit a new instructor application, the applicable fee, proof of liability insurance, and the training program that will be used.
